Richard Brandon, 25, and his friend Derek Grenfell, from Naples, Florida, were hard up on cash. They had spent everything at a local bar! Now early in the morning, on November 6, they were a little desperate but mostly drunk. They knew of an unoccupied house and searched for a way in. Richard, not wanting to alert the neighbors, found the perfect entry... the chimney! It looked big enough. But halfway down, he yelled for help and Derek alerted two Naples policemen, who contacted the Naples Fire Rescue team.
Upon arrival, they spotted a foot dangling from the fireplace. It took over an hour but they finally freed the sorry, dumb crook. The neighbors not only woke up, but recorded the rescue, and put it on YouTube. Richard went to the hospital briefly, but ended up in jail later that day, along with his friend. The police alerted Mike Whitley, the homeowner, of the situation. Mike, talking to a reporter, said, "I think this Santa was trying to remove things, rather than bring presents in."
NOTE FOR DUMB CROOKS: Chimneys are only for smoke and story-book Santas!
