Hammy the squirrel, with no mother around, was an orphan. He was only 10 days old when he was discovered and was in need of a home. He would need constant care and attention, especially in the beginning. That is where 16-year-old Abby Putterill stepped in.
Abby's parents own an animal sanctuary and Abby took to the helpless thing right away. She liked mothering the squirrel and Hammy liked to be mothered! It was a perfect match. They were often seen together, with Abby holding him in her hand.
When Hammy was about 2 months old, he started climbing on Abby and went in her hair. He loved it! Any chance he had, he would climb right up and get in his new home! After that, Abby would always put her hair in a ponytail, ready for her new housemate... uh, I mean tenant.
