![]() I always try to find stories in the States but this time I had to go south of the border! Guillermo Reyes was driving his Chevy in Mexico City this past January when he got pulled over at a checkpoint. He had been drinking some, but he was hoping that the guards would not notice. Anyway, this was one of those routine checkpoints... no worries. The police approached Reyes' car and started to ask some routine questions when they heard a voice in the car say, "He's drunk, he's drunk." The officer could not see anybody, but upon careful inspection found the "rat". The rat was a bird! It was Reyes' pet parrot that had "ratted" him out! ![]() Reyes was given a breathalyzer test, which he failed. Anyone found beyond the .08 limit in Mexico City is sent to jail for one day, then released. But now the police had a new problem. The parrot did not want to leave its owner! The police, realizing that bird and owner had such a strong bond, feared for the bird's life. So they thought of the next best thing... lock up the bird with the drunken Reyes. And so they did! Both Reyes and his pet were glad to stay together. Come to think about it, I've always wondered what a jailbird was... now I know.
