It started earlier this year with the land showdown between Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and the U.S. Government. Government officials said that they were trying to protect the Desert Tortoise. The problem with that story was that the Desert Tortoise didn't need protection... there was an overpopulation of them! It was found out later that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was just trying to seize control of the land and force Bundy out. Ultimately the BLM backed off.
In March, the BLM rounded up 41 wild horses to later be sold and slaughtered. BLM said they were not protected by the Wild-Free Roaming Horses and Burro Act because the horses were not "officially" wild. Then in April BLM was going after 90,000 acres in Texas! That got a lot of Texans irate!
In May, the BLM went to New Mexico to seize thousands of privately owned acres, under the guise of saving the Jumping Mouse. Putting the non-endangered mouse on the endangered list gives them the "legal right". The BLM doesn't really care about any mice! It seems like a regular game plan... declare a certain animal endangered or a pest, and try to seize land through the courts!
Does the government really need more land?! They already own over 40% of the land in 9 states! In Nevada alone, they own more than 84%! They also own 69% in Alaska, 57% in Utah, and over 50% in Idaho and Oregon. Even 45% of California is owned by the U.S. government. So why the big push for land? It is all in the name of environmentalism. Where will the bully BLM show up next?
