Everyone loves a good apple pie. But knowing how to make one can be a bit of a challenge, especially knowing how to make one that uses no sugar or white flour... and still comes out perfectly. Read on to see how it's done!
Pie Crust 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup butter (room temp.) ¼ cup cold water ½ tablespoon white vinegar Combine flour and salt in small bowl. Cut in butter. Combine water and vinegar and add last. Stir until thick. Divide dough in half. Grease a 9" pie pan. Flatten one half of dough and place in bottom of pan. Set other half aside for top crust. Preheat oven to 425° F. | Apple Pie Filling 4 or 5 large apples ½ cup maple syrup ½ cup honey 1 tablespoon butter, melted ½ cup whole wheat flour ⅛ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon cinnamon Peel, quarter, and slice apples; place in bowl. Add maple syrup, honey, butter, flour, salt, nut-meg, and cinnamon. Mix well. Dump mixture into pie pan. Flatten other half of dough; place on top. Crimp edges of pie crust. Slit holes in top of crust. Brush or spray top of crust with milk. Place pie on cookie sheet or tray before placing in oven (this will catch any drips as your pie bakes). Place pie on bottom rack in oven and bake at 425° F for ten minutes. Reduce heat to 350° F. Bake for approximately another hour or until crust is a light golden brown. Let stand to cool for about 30 minutes. Serve and enjoy! |
