Leon, a 12-year-old from Massachusetts, was different than most children growing up. And he always felt different in school. That is because Leon was born with only one hand. On his left wrist was just a stub. But now those days are gone!
His dad, Mr. Paul McCarthy, was determined to do something about it. He searched on the web for a solution. Mr. McCarthy found a way on YouTube to create a prosthetic hand, using a 3D printer. The cost of a machine like that is about $2000, which he could not afford. But Leon's school had one!
Now, Mr. McCarthy only had to pay for the materials to make the hand... about $10! That is a lot cheaper than a $20,000 prosthetic hand purchased through a hospital. And the hand Leon has looks a lot cooler!
Leon is not different anymore in school. Now he's special. When asked about it, he said, "It's pretty awesome." And the kids at school think his new hand is pretty awesome too! You can check him out on YouTube.
