![]() The Statue of Liberty had its 126th birthday October 28 - "America's Statue 2012". The next day Super-storm Sandy tore through the area, causing billions of dollars of damage. Even though Lady Liberty survived, Liberty Island where the statue stands did not fare so well. Sandy caused more than $59 million worth of damages to the island itself and shut down all future visits. In the statue’s left hand is a tablet with the date July 4, 1776. That is the day America declared its independence from Britain. Now, fast forward 237 years to July 4, 2013. With the help of more than 1,000 people from all over the country helping with the repairs, that is when the Statue of Liberty reopened. Now Liberty Island is once again receiving all visitors who wish to come.
