Remember the Indonesian tsunami that happened 10 years ago? It washed up on shore and crushed houses and buildings. It also killed hundreds of thousands of people. A girl called Raudhatul Jannah was caught in the middle of it. She was four when it happened. Jannah’s home was destroyed along with many others when the monstrous tidal wave hit. She clung to a plank of wood along with her parents and brother until a strong current came and pulled her and her brother away from their parents. She was floating along on the water when she reached an island. It was Banyak Island. She pulled herself out of the water and managed to survive until a fisherman found her. He brought Jannah with him to his house and gave her to his mother to care for. His mother called her Wenni and treated her as her own daughter. She cared for Jannah many years.
Every day Jannah prayed that she would see her parents alive again. One day Jannah was walking home from another village when her uncle saw her and thought she looked like his long-lost niece. He asked her some questions, then told Jannah's parents the very good news... Jannah was still alive! Jannah's mother could not keep back the tears that came to her eyes. She thanked God for saving her little girl. Now they have new hope of finding Jannah's brother who, she said, had been with her on the island. They are looking for him now, and hope the whole family will be back together soon.
