March 2014

FUN FACT:
March 16, 2014 is a very special date for our family. That's because an important holiday falls on that date - Purim! Purim is to our family what Christmas is to a lot of other families - giving of gifts, family time, and LOTS of fun!  (See pics to follow at: www.mybigfam.com.)

FUN FACT:  Did you know... ?
Every one of the names of the children in our family comes from the Bible. The youngest member of our family has three Biblical names... Joshua Paul Nahum Schultz.

January 2014

FUN FACT:  New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are fun days at our house! For New Year's Eve, all the older ones dress up in formal attire, and enjoy a night of family fun. On New Year's Day, the younger ones get to join in. Some years, we have a big veggie/fruit spread with several of Dad's famous homemade dips.

FUN FACT:  The most interesting thing about our family for most people is the fact that we do not give gifts on Christmas, or observe the holiday in any way other than to send out our Christmas photo and, perhaps, watch a movie of the Nativity story. That doesn't mean that we don't believe in gift giving, however! We have our own special day for that... Purim.  (More on that in our March 2014 issue!)

November 2013

FUN FACT:  Thanksgiving dinner at our house is quite a crowd even without company! But everyone can still fit around one table. That's because Dad custom-built a 14' table to fit the entire family... well, all but the three youngest boys. They have their own little table - also constructed by Dad.

October 2013

FUN FACT:  Eating too much candy during Halloween has never been a problem in our house, because NO CANDY has ever been consumed by any of the children since they were born.  (We make our own sweets using only natural sweeteners like honey and fruit juice.)

Q:  How can you afford to feed that many people?

A:  After that there's 16 in our family, many people say, "Oh, I could never afford that many!" But Dad replies, "Oh, I just don't think about it." He is constantly on the lookout for good deals, and stocks up whenever possible, as long as the price is right.
So rather than worry about it, we just go month to month, week to week, even day to day. But God has always provided, and it seems there is always plenty.

Q:  Did you always plan on having such a large family?

A:  No, neither Mom nor Dad had any plans on having 14 children. Mom remembers that before she was married, she was talking about having one girl and one boy.
The decision that they did make regarding the size of their family was that as many as God decided to bless them with, that was how many they would have. And so, 14 it was!

Q:  How many gallons of milk does your family drink in a week?

A:  Early on, Dad made the decision to switch from drinking milk during meals to having only water instead - water being healthier. He installed a water filter under the sink; now we can have filtered water anytime we want.
Our main uses of milk are on cereal and in baking. Still, we go through about a gallon a day (more in the summertime!).

Q:  How many loads of laundry do you do daily?

A:  We average about three loads per day. And believe it or not, we only have one washer and dryer, and Dad takes care of all the washing and drying of the laundry!
