The stranger said that she was one of Emily's neighbors that lived a few houses away. She said she was in a minor car accident and that "they" took her to the hospital to get checked out. When she came back to get her car, it was already towed and now she urgently needed some money to go get her car so she could go to work in the morning. The "neighbor" went on to say that some of the other neighbors were helping her - even naming them by name. Convinced that the story was real, Emily gave her some money. In return the "neighbor lady" gave Emily her phone number.
After several minutes, Emily decided to go to one of her neighbors to see if this was all true. The neighbors said that the same thing had happened to them a few months ago. When she went to another neighbor's house, they said the same thing. Knowing that she had been scammed, Emily called the phone number, which turned out to be bogus.
This is just one scam, but these scammers keep doing the same thing. All they have to do is change the story from time to time. The scammers don't care! They feel if you are gullible enough then you deserve to be scammed. I know... it has happened to me!
