Why was the universal healthcare plan named the Affordable Care Act? It was so termed to lure people in to believe that it was indeed affordable. After all, we were told that it would be better than what we currently had. Even talk of "free" healthcare for everyone was being sold. But there is nothing free about healthcare! Oh, excuse me, it is free for prisoners, people on welfare, and in some states, illegal aliens. But for taxpayers, it is far from free. Actually, the taxpayers are funding it all! In Illinois, premiums have increased nearly 50% from last year! In Tennessee it's 63%, 69% in Oklahoma, and over 100% in Arizona! Instead of affordable it has become vastly unaffordable! The Democrat Governor of Minnesota, Mark Dayton, said, "The reality is, the Affordable Care Act is no longer affordable", and called it, "a total disaster." In October, Bill Clinton said that many people "wind up with their premiums doubled and their coverage cut in half. It's the craziest thing in the world!"
Since it is far from affordable, I will refer to it as most do... Obamacare. Many insurance carriers opted out of Obamacare. UnitedHealthcare left Illinois and Aetna followed soon thereafter. Land of Lincoln Health went bankrupt last year. In many states people have one or two choices... that's it! 20% of Americans have only one choice. If that wasn't bad enough, many hospitals and doctors are refusing Obamacare plans. So, what happened? How were we sold this "disaster"?
Jonathan Gruber, economist and Obama's main architect of this healthcare debacle, said that the bill was written intentionally in a tortured way to deceive the taxpayers. Gruber said, "If you had a law that healthy people are going to pay in so sick people can get money, it would not have passed. Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage... call it the stupidity of the American voter, or whatever" and added, "a very clever exploitation of the lack of understanding of the American voter."
But to get taxpayers to go along with this awful plan, a great salesman was needed. Enter Barack Obama. He deliberately deceived the voters when he declared, "If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. If you like your healthcare plan, you will be able to keep your healthcare plan, period." He tried to put everyone at ease, you know... trust me, trust me. Even well known liberal, Bill Maher, said afterwards, "He (Obama) shouldn't have lied."
Gruber also reiterated, "That bill passed because the American voter is too stupid to understand what really is going on." But it sounds like he was talking about the Democrats in Congress who passed this big turkey! California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, also attempting to deceive taxpayers, said, "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." What?! That is nuts! Do you know how many pages the bill was? 2,700 pages! Gruber admitted that it was designed to be so huge and cumbersome to get past Congress and "to make sure CBO (Congressional Budget Office) would pass it." It passed through the House even though 34 Democrats voted against it. No Republicans in Congress voted for the bill. Every Democratic senator voted for it and Obama signed it into law. Since then, other pages of rules and regulations have been added to it. Do you want to guess how much? About 20,000 pages! And I'm not kidding... I wish I was.
Obamacare was doomed to fail from the beginning. It was based on healthy people paying for everyone else. How is that going to work? People realized soon that this was not insurance but rather an enormous mandatory tax. The taxpayer was forced to join... or else! It is not right to force young people to give money to other people. It also isn't right for people who try to live healthy to pay for those who don't. People who eat right, exercise, and live right were put in a pool of junk-food eaters, couch potatoes, alcohol abusers, drug users, ones living in sexually immorality, etc. Unhealthy people are of course more apt to be sick and in need of hospitals than healthy people.
Obamacare was not flexible. Most young people and healthy Americans did not want full coverage but a limited coverage instead. It was cheaper to pay the penalty than to sign up. Most of the time, people had to pay out-of-pocket because the deductibles were so high. More choices were needed.
Many businesses helped with their employees' insurance needs before Obamacare. Once Obamacare went into effect, the government forced companies to provide full health insurance for all employees working 30 hours or more. This is where the government is plain stupid! Businesses can't afford that. They would go bankrupt! All this did was force businesses to hire only part-time employees. Workers who were working 40 hours are now working under 30. Even some managers were limited to under 30 hours. Obamacare proved to be a hardship for millions of working taxpayers.
Since the government was involved in Obamacare, it was inefficient and a big money-waster. Do you know how much was spent on the website alone? $10,000? No. $100,000? No. $1,000,000?! Still no. Over two billion dollars was spent just on the website!! That's our money!
All together we're talking about billions of dollars that we will never see again. Because of government involvement, insurance companies were starting to lose money and had to get out before they went bankrupt.
Obamacare has been a disaster. It should never have been crammed down our throats. With Obamacare we were headed toward a single-payer system. Do you know what that is? Total-government-takeover healthcare, "medicare for all", or socialized medicine. In other words... socialism or communism!
Now the Republicans have inherited this mess created by the Democrats. If we stayed on the same Obamacare path the whole country would have crashed and gone bankrupt. Let's hope that President Trump and Congress can take care of this massive failure. I think they can and I think they will. But the next time you hear "hope and change" from a candidate like we did eight years ago, remember one thing: Obamacare!
