January 19 is Martin Luther King Day and I am going to try and honor him this month with this column. Dr. King said and did a lot of wise things. I wonder what he would say today. Dr. King would be upset with how Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and many others responded during the riots of Ferguson. He would also be upset by the constant contention with police. Dr. King said, "Rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat." Jackson and Sharpton seemed to incite, even encourage the protesters to contend with police and break the law!
Dr. King said, "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus." But that is precisely what some black leaders of today are failing to do, unwilling to take a stand. Stand up for what is right - in a right way! If you stand up for what is right in a wrong way... then you will be wrong!
Johnathan Gentry, Allen West, Keith Butler, Jesse Lee Peterson, Robert Woodson, Deroy Murdock, Roy Innis, Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Condoleezza Rice, Dr. Ben Carson, David James Manning, Rev. Bill Owens, and many other black pastors and leaders are trying to do the right thing, but the media overlooks them and instead gives time to bitter, self-absorbed, divisive leaders like Jackson and Sharpton. Why?! It should not matter whether you're black, brown or white, man or woman, Democrat or Republican! Do what is right! Say what is right! Act right! Like Dr. King said, "The time is always right to do what is right." And: "Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness."
If you think that you've been wronged, don't resort to fighting and bitterness... in the long run, it won't do anything good! Listen to the words of Martin Luther King, "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend" and "Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
Why do some protesters damage other people's properties and businesses because they're “white" or to show how upset they are?! Are they out of their minds?! Stop being thugs and criminals! Dr. King would have never stood for that! But Jackson and Sharpton continue to give these thugs a pass!
Now lawlessness is spreading from Ferguson to New York and across the country. And why is that? Because police who happened to be "white" killed Michael Brown and Eric Garner. With a certain large group of the black population, it doesn't matter if the police are in the wrong or not; they find the police guilty regardless of the circumstances.
In New York, two police officers were shot in cold blood by a black man named Ismaaiyl Brinsley. Why? To get even with "white" policemen. What a cowardly, evil thing to do! And the officers (Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos) were not even white! One was Asian and the other Hispanic. What senseless brutality... utter craziness! There are a number of law-abiding blacks who say that the police are keeping them safer and who are grateful for the police. What did Sharpton say about the senseless killings of the two officers? He said he received death threats and was even called bad names. Is he that self-absorbed to bring attention back to himself?! I guess so! Dr. King said, "Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him." Over a thousand anti-police protesters tried to shut down New York City streets, just days after the two officers were shot and killed. They seemed to not even care about the two policemen who were murdered! It's disgraceful!
Juan Williams said that the #1 cause of death of black men in America, ages 15-34, is murder - not by police, but by other black men! In 2011, the vast majority of black people who were murdered (2,447) were killed by other black people! In Chicago, for the month of November alone, 27 black men were killed! Do you hear any outcry about that?! No, because they were killed by other black men. But if a policeman kills one black man, he is painted as a racist and a murderer!
Remember the words of Dr. King, "I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." We need more people with noble character! Stop the fighting! Stop the lawlessness! Stop the hate!!
