This is a terrible tragedy! But what happened next was even more shocking and appalling! There was a large voice in the black community that was praising Shanks for killing the officer because he was white. What! Killing someone solely because of their race is racist!! There was also an outcry because Shanks had died. Many were calling for "more cops to be killed". Are they nuts?! I can't believe this is the society we live in!
A few days later, a Madison police officer intervened to stop a fight between some black people. One of the women involved started to attack the officer. Someone in the crowd said, "We need to start killing these officers." This is crazy! These police officers are here for your protection! They are here to keep law and order! Without them, this society would be a chaotic and awful place to live.
In West Palm Beach, Florida, a white policeman pulled over a driver going 31 mph over the speed limit - near children! A video captures it all. The officer acted and spoke only in a respectful manner. The 62-year-old black woman, however, was rude and very disrespectful. When the officer handed her the ticket, she said, "No wonder you people get shot, you're absolute #*%&#*!" This is disgraceful!
A Philadelphia police officer asked to use the restroom in a downtown Starbucks because it was locked. The white female employee said rudely that it was for paying customers only. He asked again politely, but was met with the same response. He left. He wrote on Starbucks' official Facebook page about the incident and added, "I was even more astonished that the many customers and other employees said nothing and seemed indifferent. This is the world cops live in. It's hip for this generation to berate and totally disrespect cops and praise cop killers as the heroes of their time." It's terrible but true.
One Starbucks customer said that the cops need "to give respect to get it". Not true! Citizens need to give respect first! If you do, police will respect you. Sure, not all police officers are fit to wear the uniform, but that is less than 2% of the police workforce. The vast majority of police (98-99%) are hard-working, honorable and respectful men and women.
Furthermore, just wearing the uniform demands our respect, as it does for soldiers or firefighters! Cops are not the enemy! They are not the problem! They are here to protect and serve. Let them do their job. Everyone should give them the respect they deserve!
