Now, I feel that I can talk about this, since I am half Native American. I don't find this offensive in the least, and disparaging? No way! I kind of like some recognition of my Indian heritage. Who brought this appeal before the board? A small group of Native Americans. How small? 5! That's right, 5!
I called my full-blooded Native American mother, who lives 1 hour west from our Tuscarora tribe, located outside of Buffalo, NY. I asked her about the ruling. She said the name "Redskins" didn't bother her at all. In fact she said she never heard any complaint about the name in the 81 years she and the Redskins have been around (they both began in 1933). She could not figure out what all the fuss was about!
Come to find out, over 90% of Native Americans do not find it offensive and either like the name or don't care! The word, "redskin" originated as a Native American expression of solidarity. The current logo was designed and approved by Native American leaders! In fact, the vast majority of Americans as a whole want to keep the name.
Where will all this lead? I think the Kansas City Chiefs are next! You're going to have to change the Dallas Cowboys for offending 5 cowboys! I know, what about the Dallas Cows? Maybe men with the name Bill will protest the Buffalo Bills. Can you imagine 5 packers being offended and wanting Green Bay to change their name... it ain't gonna happen! Maybe the MLB team Washington Nationals changed their name from Senators because it was offensive to the House of Representatives!
Well at least Chicago Bears is safe with an animal. But what about the extreme animal rights people - they might be offended! In the future the teams will have to have names of inanimate objects. You know, like furniture or pleasant things like pillows. How about The Washington Sofas vs. The Dallas Tables? It just doesn't have the same ring to it. Hey, I know, what about The Green Bay Cushions vs. The Chicago Pillows? Definitely not!
But seriously, we are not that far off! Across the US, the word "manhole" is being replaced with utility hole. Of course, you can't say Merry Christmas or display those words anywhere, because it might be offensive. The EEOC says it is illegal for employers to discriminate against criminals because it has a "disproportionate" impact on minorities. Can't offend the criminals! The current administration has banned all U.S. government agencies from linking Islam with terrorism. Can you believe this?! This is just the tip of the iceberg! What do I say? STOP THE MADNESS!! Oh yeah, and go Redskins!
