The fastest growing sport in the world today is MMA or Mixed Martial Arts, and the biggest MMA organization in the world is the UFC. Since 1993, the UFC has had nearly 200 major events and numerous minor events, but what happened this fall was unbelievable to viewers and fighters alike. Nothing close to this has ever happened since UFC's inception. And all this happened in less than one month.
The main event for UFC 193 showcased Ronda "Rowdy" Rousey vs. Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm, on November 15. No one gave Holly a chance since she was a huge underdog. Ronda, arguably the biggest star in the UFC, has been dominant in MMA with a record of 12-0 (6-0 in the UFC). She's won most of her matches in the first minute of the first round - usually by an armbar submission. In August she knocked out the Brazilian, Bethe Correia, in 34 seconds. In February she set the record for shortest match in UFC championship history, beating undefeated Cat Zingano in just 14 seconds! Ronda was not only going to beat Holly, but anybody the UFC could put up against her. She made it quite plain... when she retired in several years, she was going to be undefeated!
For most, it was a forgone conclusion... Ronda Rousey was definitely going to win, and in the first round! But how soon? Within a minute or less? And by knockout or armbar? Time would tell. It didn't matter that Holly was 9-0 because she had never faced anybody like Ronda! Everyone was surprised when the bout lasted more than a minute... then two. Holly was holding her own. By the end of the first round (5 minutes), Holly actually landed more shots and was winning! Could Ronda lose?! No way! Impossible!
Ronda was going to come out in the second round and finish her! But it never happened. Holly knocked her out within the first minute of the second round. Wow! The crowd was shocked! What?! No way! The pay-per-view TV audience was shocked as well. Even watchers who wanted Ronda to lose were shocked. The looks on Ronda's face and those of her team were of disbelief. This was a bad dream, a nightmare, that's all. But it was real. Not only had Holly won, she had dominated the fight! The unthinkable had happened, right before everyone's eyes.
The main part of the event had the Brazilian Jose Aldo Jr. vs. the Irishman... "The Notorious" Conor McGregor. A lot of viewers tuned in for this one. Jose had been the UFC featherweight champion for 10 years! Nobody had beaten him in over 10 years and he was only 29 years old! Many people were waiting in anticipation for this slug fest. Would it go all 5 rounds? Some thought it might. At least 2-3 rounds. Conor said that he would finish Jose in the first round. Conor, 27, had backed up all his talk so far, but was he in over his head now?! Many thought so.
The bout seemed to be over as soon as it started. Conor McGregor beat the champion, Jose Aldo, in only 13 seconds! Two champions went down in less than one hour, three in less than a month! And not just any champions - three dominating champions that got dominated! Three champions that were assuredly going to remain champions for a long time... nobody was going to defeat them. Nobody was going to stop them. But once you think you're invincible or above defeat, watch out. Like the proverb says, "Pride goes before the fall."
These three UFC champions who thought they would stay on top and not be defeated... lost. Many empires, dynasties and kingdoms have come and gone throughout our 6,000-year history, thinking that they would last too. Many empires, like the Qing, Mongol, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Roman, etc. (too many to list), appeared as if they would never end, but they did. They either collapsed from within or without. Germany seemed to be taking over the world not too long ago but was left devastated in only 12 years. The great British Empire has been reduced to mediocrity. What about the mighty United States? We are the dominating force in the world today and referred to as the world police. We stand proud, even invincible, but it seems inevitable that we are headed for collapse... from within or without. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think so. The Bible says, "All nations before Him are as nothing" and "God is Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another." And also, "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled." We as a nation have been on the exalted side; now it seems a humbling is near. Like with the previous UFC champs... pride goes before the fall!
